I'd look for the newest, lowest mile bike you can find used locally in the $2000 range. Buy a good helmet and jacket, do NOT buy any accessories for it. Keep it below 750ccs, looking at bikes like the Rebel 250, an older Rebel 400, the Suzuki Savage/ S40 650cc, the Shadow, the Kawasaki Vulcan 500, the Shadow 600, and other bikes like that.
Let me tell you, that bike didn't even know I was on it! I'm pretty sure a 250cc motor would easily carry a 400 pound man, no problem. I'm not sure about the gas milage, but I'm sure it is going to be *excellent*. My guess would be 60 or 70 mpg. I'm sure you can find the exact numbers online somewhere. Nov 19, 2005.

The Honda Rebel 500 is a great starter bike for any beginner rider. It is easy to ride and looks uniquely good. There are only a few other cruiser-style motorcycles on the market that can compete with the Rebel 500 in terms of style, and none of them are as affordable.
But '85 Honda Rebel 250 w/40k miles, $1300, I think that is stretching it. There are plenty of products that will make the bike shine. Kelly Blue Book for my area says $1225 when purchased from a dealer, trade-in value $765, both for excellent condition. Being new to bikes you should have someone else determine if it is in excellent condition.
